Our Pastorcita, as we gently call her, came to the shelter in 2014. An old man that lived in a van, surrounded by 20 dogs he had taken in, died unexpectedly. So between different shelters we tried to divide the care for those unfortunate animals. Pastorecita was the one we got. She was already an adult by the time she came to us. Little do we know about her past, but it was clear that she never got used to humans. She had panic in her eyes anytime we tried to come close to her, and touching her was unthinkable. But she made friends with the other dogs and lived independently ion their company, with our service of food and cleaning. When we had to move her to a new installation, we needed a vet with a dart to sedate her to be able to catch her. She had made a cave for herself under the cement floor, and that is where she hid away from us humans. To get her out of there took some unexpected effort. After all these years she is still with us - very old by now, and her mental capacities are not really well anymore. She is like a slightly dement old lady - not really capturing the situation anymore, so being caressed suddenly feels completely acceptable. This winter I took her home, it was cold and her old bones were struggling with the impact of humidity. And there she is for the first time in her life in a house. But, she doesn’t wonder about it, as she doesn’t really capture the situation anymore. All she still manages to keep track of is eating, stumbling through the garden to find a spot to take in the sun and to sleep, many many hours of the day. The day will come when she won t wake up anymore, but till then we will provide her the love and care she deserves.
